Writing about what is free food
If you like food and are good at verbal expression, then writing may be a career option you can consider. Researching food is not only one of the more enjoyable jobs in free writing, but you will never lack restaurant recommendations and potentially free meals-even if you may lack a pair of well-fitting pants.
To be a successful freelance food writer, you need to know how to describe food. At least in traditional literature, the key to portrayal is to make targeted and specific comparisons. To understand why, ask yourself which one you find is more attractive: "This is the best shrimp I have ever tasted" or "Lemon Lime Garlic Shrimp, grilled on apple wood, has a crunchy texture in the crunch "The soft resistance of caramel and rare medium salmon fillet"?
The basic rule of writing food is to make your readers hope they have some delicious food you are writing, and let the reader make a personal investment in the food. There are some strange things about human thinking: whenever we think of an object or activity, we trigger certain parts of the brain, and when we interact with the object or participate in the activity, these parts pop up. In other words: if we consider throwing a baseball, the nerves in our arms will twitch. Or, if we think of eating a thick steak, our stomachs will growl and drool. When writing an article about food, you want to activate the same part of the brain to make readers feel like they are sharing the experience of eating the food. Words like "delicious", "delicious", or worst of all, "really tasty" do not affect readers' emotions. Only food-related words—or words and images with strong emotional connotations—will really make your readers cry.
After writing the article, where will you market your food article? If you live in a big city, you may write for local newspapers or other newspapers (ie Los Angeles Weekly, Austin Chronicle, etc.). Millions of people read these articles every day or every week, and a large part of them read the food section. When anyone in a big city needs to book a restaurant for a date, business dinner, party, or other social event, they will seek advice from the food section of the local newspaper. Great review of the new restaurant. Keep up to date with the opening and closing of restaurants in your city. The newly opened restaurant can be your "bread and butter". Local newspapers and online city guides always want to print new restaurant reviews.
If you have a little-known local meeting place, please write an article about it. Submit your article to the local newspaper along with the appropriate inquiry letter. You can be the first to write about this place and put the necessary business on their way. In the end, you got a good salary from the newspaper, a published clip, a line of quotes, and hope for more jobs and recommendations.
Another option is to write for a magazine dedicated to food, dining, city nightlife, general lifestyle, or the travel market. If you plan to write for a magazine, then your choice of what to write will become more extensive. You can write how-to articles, interviews, cookware reviews, etc. If you want to write for a local guide, the best way is to write a restaurant review. Tourists may not know that there are any popular restaurants or diners in the area. The tour guide provides detailed information and guidance about the highlights and not so famous of the area. This means that your restaurant reviews and other food articles will always have a steady stream of potential readers.
If you don’t live in a big city, it’s much harder to become a food writer. The mom and pop cafes in the city center may have some of the best omelets you've ever tasted, but if everyone in town has eaten in a cafe, how can you sell an article? Coffee every Friday night? Consider selling your article to a regional journal. The Department of Transportation of some states in the United States often publish monthly regional news. Editors of these magazines often see local restaurant reviews as a source of human interest or a way to promote out-of-state tourism to non-traditional destinations.
Or, you can try writing templates for recipes, writing press releases for caterers, or writing advertisements for food companies. Companies and book publishers hire talented food writers to help market everything from new pasta sauces to delicious steaks
